In October of 2010, my buddy Mitchell started a blog called Thoughtful Pop. I thought that was cool so I started a blog called Lick the Fridge. We both thought we were cool because we had blogs, and so together we started a third blog called The Write On Project. We were so cool, in fact, that we invited others to be part of the coolness. Mitchell, arguably the cooler of the two of us, even wrote a cool description for the about page. I agreed it was cool and so we started using it. It read, and still reads, like this:
The Write On Project is the bastard child of Lick The Fridge and Thoughtful Pop and was born into this world to fearlessly champion both writing and community, or ‘Writmunity’. The goal here at TWOP is to bring bloggers together on a common theme and highlight our collective insight, creativity and brilliance. Anyone can, and should, participate. Once a month a single topic will be chosen upon which we will all independently craft masterpieces that will inspire the masses and grow our legends. The Phoenix is taxying into position. The more of us that climb aboard, the higher we may all gallantly soar. If we’re lucky, we could even get a little light headed.
Our coolness abounding, our first few posts had tens of readers. The Phoenix most definitely was soaring high. Higher than a kite hovering above a poppy field perhaps. We didn’t rest on our laurels, however. We continued climbing into the stratosphere until several months later we were breathing vapor along with the almost two dozen TWOP writers that we had seduced into our writing cult with a free dime bag. And we were eating a lot of pretzels.
There was nothing that could stop us now. Except for the several things that stopped us, mostly revolving around the main thing that stopped us, which was that we dropped the ball. We were coming down from our lofty position, our aforementioned ascendency quickly doing a 180. We nose dived through the atmosphere until gravity (and our laziness) reached up its meaty paws and groped us, slamming us into the earth with irrefutable irrefutability. The fact that we couldn’t even crash into the three fourths of the planet that was water proved how uncool we had become.
Our wings had been clipped, and the dream of soaring to gallant heights ever again was deferred. Clearly, we were no longer cool. Our light headedness was replaced with a several month long heaviness that was so daunting it caused our knuckles to drag on the floor when we walked. Some scientists have even linked our fall from cool with global warming.
With seemingly no way back, a remarkable turn of events suddenly took place. Even the most brilliant minds of our time could not fathom the sudden reversal of fortunes that were about to grace us with their presence. We fixed our wings. We stopped dragging our knuckles. We rediscovered our cool. We stopped being so fucking lazy!
We found our old dealer. And, ladies and gentlemen of the writing community, he has promised to take us to incredible highs once again. We will soar together, reestablishing ourselves among the upper echelon of cool. If Miles Davis was the birth of the cool, then the re-emergence of The Write On Project is the rebirth, perhaps even the afterbirth, of cool. It has been suggested that we might even starting writing backwards. We’re that cool.
You’re that cool. Or at least you could be. Climb aboard the taxying Phoenix and come gallantly soar with us. You know you wanna! We would love to share the coolness with you. Here’s how to join the cool.

Now I feel like I need to stop being fucking lazy, thanks!
Glad I could inspire such thoughts! Please join us!

Glad it’s kicking back into gear! I will do my best to get you something for this month’s theme. And I adore Miles Davis, the coolest cat ever
–I discovered him decades ago while taking a college course called “The History of Jazz” and have loved his music ever since.
Would love to have you back on TWOP. You have a month to get something in! And, yes, Miles Davis is a pretty darn cool dude. Listening to him right now actually. . .
So glad you are back with this project! I joined and then you all stopped. Was wondering if it was me joining. Just kidding. Maybe. Anyway, hoping me signing on with you won’t again affect you soaring and all of that.
Hi Kelly. Well, I can honestly that us dropping the TWOP ball and you joining up around the same time was purely coincidental. . .
I think you joining us will add to our soarability. Let’s get ready to take off! Write on!
